The organization started in 1985 as a project of the Junior league known as the Science Station. Originally the museum was housed in a historic brick structure built in 1917 as a fire station. Over time the organization expanded and built an IMAX® theater as well as expanded exhibit space in a neighboring building.

The location in downtown Cedar Rapids on the Cedar River was heavily damaged by the flood in June 2008. Many saved items were relocated to the Lindale Mall with an Exhibit Gallery on the upper level and an Education Center in the Lower Level for almost five years.

In September 2013 found what appeared to be a long term home at 5824 Council ST NE.  This included a large hands-on exhibit area, spacious classrooms, and a Makerspace.  It appeared to be an ideal solution.

In the Spring 2015 a move to a smaller location at 705 N Center Point Rd, Hiawatha, IA looked like an better solution, without exhibits in the former museum type area, including well designed class rooms for the long admired science classes and included a Makerspace for the younger generations to grow into.  The name changed to Iowa Innovation Learning Center at that time too.

In November 2015 the disappointing announcement that the Iowa Innovation Learning Center was moving out of the Hiawatha building location.  Then in December 2015 the organization permanently closed.

The organization offered hands-on STEM based programming for thousands of children, individuals, families, groups, and scouts, both on-site and off-site throughout Eastern Iowa during the course of operations. To ensure that our community continues to be served with quality STEM programming and opportunities, Imagination Iowa, the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) initiative of the Iowa Startup Accelerator, will offer summer camps starting in 2016.
